It’s that time of year again for me to hate on New Year New you BS.
Here is the deal; I don’t hate you for having the idea that you are going to be better this coming year. I admire the idea and the desire but I take issue with the process many choose. The process in question is any that does not address the fundamental issues that got us to where we are. Providing a training program that meets at X amount of times to do Y is not enough to achieve Z.
For most of us, we got to where we are after years of a certain behavior. Most of us did not lose track for a few weeks and are working to get back a minimal amount of loss or burn off a minimal amount of gain. We are dealing with years of ingrained ideas and behaviors that have created the pattern that has produced the results we are living with, but want to change.
The key is not showing up and working out. We all can do that for a few weeks. Change will occur in a few weeks but it won’t last. Lasting change comes after months that lead into years of behavior. This requires a fundamental shift in how we look at ourselves and how we make our daily choices.
What we want is easy to define. The hard question is Why? That is the 1st step. Why do we want to change? This gives us a foundation to build upon. This gives us a reason to stop doing what we have found comfort in but not the level of success we want.
Real simply put – why do you want to get off the couch and do something you know is going to suck a few days a week?!
