Rock Steady Boxing and Parkinson's
Why boxing, of all things
Parkinson's tends to shrink movement. Steps get smaller, gestures get smaller, the voice gets quieter. Boxing training does the opposite of all three — it demands big, deliberate, forceful movement, repeated, with a coach asking for more.
That is the whole idea. It is not boxing because boxing is tough. It is boxing because the movements are large, rhythmic and forceful in exactly the directions the condition works against.
What a session includes
Footwork and balance work, punching combinations on pads and bags, strength and range-of-motion work, and voice work — yes, shouting, on purpose. Sessions are coach-led throughout and scaled to the individual, not to the group average.
Non-contact, without exception
Nobody gets hit. There is no sparring, no partner contact drilling, and no expectation that anyone works beyond what they came in able to do.
The part people do not expect
The room. Training alongside other people with the same condition, at the same time each week, turns out to matter as much as the exercise. Attendance in these programs is high for a reason, and it is rarely only about the physical benefit.
Who it is for
Anyone diagnosed with Parkinson's, at any stage, with clearance from their doctor. There is no fitness requirement to start and no boxing experience needed. Ask us about the current group times.
